Saraland Homes: What’s In a Name?
Saraland, Al homes are popular year after year, but it all began in 1800 with a Spanish land grant to Don Diego Alvarez. The city’s first name became Alvarez Station. As other pioneers moved into the area, the city’s name was changed again – this time to Cleveland Station. The name of Saraland, however, came courtesy of C. J. DeWitt. He was a retired minister-editor who came to the area and opened the first post office on the Southern Railroad in 1895. Because of his efforts and devotion to the town, the community gathered together and decided to name the city after his wife, Sara, as tribute.
