Baldwin County’s Comprehensive Plan May Expand Zoning Countywide

The newly proposed “Horizon 2025: Baldwin County Comprehensive Plan,” which was put together by the Genesis Group after a number of public gatherings last year, presents a recommendation to extend zoning countywide by referendum.  The plan included, among other suggestions, to merge the county’s zoning ordinance, subdivision regulations, and other land-use regulations into a unified development code (UDC).  This UDC would consolidate all phases of the land development process from the zoning of a property to the development itself.  The proposal also added that the county should arrange zoning elections in such a way as to consider countywide election, targeted districts, and current processes and changes in legislation.

Nevertheless, Baldwin County officials urge that this comprehensive plan is only a recommendation at this time and is subject to approval from the Planning and Zoning Commission and the County Commission.  The main goal in having this Comprehensive plan is to manage growth for continued economic growth as well.
