Baldwin Pops Band to Perform in Fairhope AL Feb 7th

According to recent Gulf Coast news, the talented Baldwin Pops Band are planning on performing on Tuesday, February 7th at Gulf Coast AL’s Fairhope Civic Center. The concert will be free of charge and is sponsored by the City of Fairhope and by a grant from Alabama State Council on the Arts. Community members and visitors will not want to miss this opportunity to hear the Baldwin Pops Band perform with selections from famed composers such as Guiseppe Verdi, John de Meij, Pietro Mascagni, John Williams, and Leonard Bernstein. Alabama’s Gulf Coast 2011 Tourism Numbers may hit New Record

Accordingly, this year’s tourism numbers are expected to hit a record 5 million, which is a significant turnaround since the 47 percent drop following the 2010 oil spill. Although the final numbers for 2011 will not be reported until 2012, a currently reported $237 million spent in lodging so far has topped the previous record of $228 million for 2007. Lodging revenue for the summer of 2011 was 16 percent more than in 2009 and retail spending was up 9.3 percent.

Baldwin County AL Unemployment Rate Slightly Lower than 2010 average

Some good news came from the state Department of Industrial Relations this month—Baldwin County’s April unemployment rate was slightly lower than the 2010 average. Alabama’s April 2011 unemployment rate was reported as 9.3 percent, which is down from the comparable rate of 9.8 percent from last year’s data. Currently Baldwin County is ranked 55 among the state’s 67 counties (ranking is from highest to lowest) for unemployment and Mobile County is at number 33. The national unemployment rate for April was 9 percent, which puts Baldwin County close to this percentage.

10 housing markets set for biggest rise in 2011

“Two different kinds of cities to see rebound in house sales; reasons include increase in jobs and lower real estate prices”

“Despite U.S. housing markets being generally dreary since 2008, there are a few promising patches across the country, according to 24/7 Wall St. Review . 24/7 Wall St. looked at data from Fiserve Case Shiller, which gathers and analyzes housing information, and compiled a list of ten markets that will rebound the most in 2011.

The list indicates that two kinds of real estate markets are on the rise: one that was generally stable, but was hurt by the recession; and one that will rise because lower housing costs are making it affordable for residents to buy a home for the first time in decades.

The twelve cities in which homes prices will increase the most in 2011 are divided into two categories. One comprises cities in the Northwest with mostly white populations, stable middle classes andone or two major industries that dominate employment. Some of these cities are removed from larger metropolises like Chicago or L.A., meaning they serve geographic areas that might stretch several hundred miles, making them business and agricultural hubs.

The second category of cities is composed of cities that have not been as economically prosperous, but have made the list because lower housing prices have changed the residents’ ability to purchase homes that were previously unaffordable.”

Alabama Governor pushing Gulf Shores Hotel and Conference Center project

Alabama Governor Robert Bentley commented recently that on his list of priorities is the beachfront hotel and conference center in Gulf Shores. This first-class beachfront hotel and conference center project would be built at the site of the old Gulf State Park hotel and lodge on Beach Boulevard, and could be expected to be a financial draw. Although there are still some legal concerns involving whether a private company can build a convention center on state land, the governor has hopes that this project will re-shape the Gulf Shores and make it a top convention destination in the Southeast region.

Mobile AL’s “Rainforest Experience” Exhibit Extended One More Week

The recent traveling exhibit called the “Rainforest Experience,” has been a big hit in Mobile AL. The Gulf Coast Exploreum Science Center have had record crowds for this exhibit, averaging 1,085 visitors daily to downtown Mobile. Due to this high demand, the exhibit is being extended one more week, scheduled to move May 1 to another location. The “Rainforest Experience” features 20 endangered or exotic animals including Bengal tigers, a Capuchin monkey, a Ringtail Lemur, an Asian Fishing cat, and two Colombian boas, just to name a few. General admission is $16 for adults, $15 for youth and seniors, $14 for children and $4 for members; tickets that also include an IMAX film are available at $19 for adults and $18 for youth and seniors. New Boat Facility begins Construction this month in Mobile AL

Construction on the Saunders Yachtworks boat facility begins this month as officials broke ground last week. This multimillion dollar project has been in the works for years and is expected to attract new visitors nationwide. A Mobile AL based company, White Spunner Construction, was given a $5.14 million contract to build the facility, and the work is expected to start this Monday April 18th and run for 15 months to completion, creating more than 100 jobs in the process.
